Viral, Thailand Will Distribute 1 Million Cannabis Plants to Citizens for Free

The Thai royal government plans to distribute one million cannabis plants to its citizens for free starting next June.

This is done in order to socialize the new rules, that the government allows people to grow marijuana in their homes.

Thailand’s Minister of Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, in a Facebook post on May 8, explained the policy.

According to him, the Thai government is implementing this step so that residents can cultivate cannabis plants like other household plants.

In addition, it will make the community and the government a big profit of around 10 billion baht or the equivalent of Rp. 4.2 trillion per year from marijuana.

This policy was announced following a decision by the Thai kingdom in January to allow citizens to grow cannabis trees at home.

Residents are allowed to grow marijuana on condition that they have reported it to the local government. The new rules will take effect on June 9.

However, marijuana is grown only for medical needs. Cannabis grown may not be used for commercial purposes.

This policy is a step by the Thai government to promote cannabis as a commercial crop.

Thailand was the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize marijuana for research and medical use in 2018.

Since then, marijuana use has been strictly regulated with some gradual restrictions.

However, companies that want to use marijuana in their products must maintain a maximum limit of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The extracted content does not contain more than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol or high THC.

Thai officials hope the cannabis industry doesn’t just generate hundreds of millions of dollars every year. But it can also attract foreign tourists.

The reason is that currently quite a lot of foreign tourists are returning to visit Thailand after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The regulation will be implemented on June 9, then Thai citizens will be allowed to own and use all parts of the cannabis plant.

Anutin stated that residents no longer need to get permission to grow marijuana at home.

As long as marijuana is grown for medicinal / medical purposes and does not contain THC above the legal maximum. (R8/HR Online/Jujang Editor)
